New EC cosmetic restrictions come into force
Posted on Wednesday 30th Jun 2010
These are the new restrictions on ingredients found in many of today's commercial cosmetic products, such as deodorants, hair dyes, shampoos, soaps and toothpastes.
They begin as early as 15th of July this year and will be running through until 1st of November next year. All the restricted ingredients are harmful to the environment and many are skin irritants too.
Some of the compounds facing stronger regulation include the following
p-Phenylenediamine
An organic compound and polymer, found in most hair dyes on the market. The darker the colour the higher the concentration.
It is also a known contact allergen.
Toluene-2,5-diamine
Can cause eye inflammation and has been known to cause skin sensitisation.
Florine Compounds
Commonly found in toothpastes, can damage the environment when found in high concentrates.
